HC Deb 15 March 1878 vol 238 cc1398-9
MR. SAMPSON LLOYD

asked the President of the Board of Trade, Whether, in connection with the erection of a new lighthouse on the Eddystone reef of rocks, he can hold out any hopes of the erection of a signal station there, connected with the mainland by a submarine cable?

SIR CHARLES ADDERLEY

Sir, I can hold out no hopes of the erection by the Trinity House on the Eddystone rock of a station for signalling the names and destination of passing ships, as the establishment of such a station is not within the province of the general lighthouse authorities, is incompatible with the duties of the light keepers, and cannot be provided out of the funds over which the Board of Trade have control. There are already two efficient signal stations in this vicinity—one at Prawle Point, near the Start, and another at the Lizard—both under the management of private individuals.
