HC Deb 11 March 1878 vol 238 cc1045-6
MR. ALDERMAN M'ARTHUR

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether any reply has been sent to the Memorial to the Queen from the inhabitants of Ceylon, praying for the cessation of ecclesiastical subsidies from the revenues of the Colony; and, if so, whether such reply will be laid upon the Table of the House in continuation of the Correspondence presented last Session?

SIR MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH

Sir, I believe that the Memorial to which the hon. Member refers was received nearly a year ago, and I cannot find that any reply has been sent to it. Probably a reply was thought unnecessary, as the public were fully informed of Lord Carnarvon's decision on the subject by despatches which have been already published, and also by the answer of my right hon. Friend the present Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant to a Question addressed to him by the hon. Member.
