HC Deb 15 August 1878 vol 242 c2021
MR. COLE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty, Whether it is true, as reported, that it is the intention of the Government to remove the "Ganges" training ship from Falmouth to Portland; and, if so, what are the reasons for such removal?

MR. W. H. SMITH

Sir, the Admiralty have had under their consideration proposals for the removal of the ship from Falmouth; but having received memorials from the local authorities against the proposed change, they have decided to postpone any decision until after the inspection in September. The grounds for the proposed change are that the boys in the ship are nearly all London boys, Cornwall affording scarcely any; that the position itself in which the ship lies is very exposed in bad weather, and the expense of keeping her there is probably larger than it would be at Portland.
