HC Deb 15 February 1877 vol 232 cc383-4
MR. GOLDSMID

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, What action has been taken by the Government in consequence of the escape of Fenian convicts from Freemantle, Western Australia, in the American ship "Catalpa," which it is reported was sent expressly for the purpose of receiving the said convicts?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

It has not been deemed expedient to take any action in the matter referred to, beyond making a strict inquiry into it, and a revision of the local arrangements under which the escape of the convicts occurred.
