HC Deb 03 May 1875 vol 223 cc1957-8
MR. W. M ARTHUE

asked the President of the Local Government Board, Whether any special instructions have been given to Mr. Lloyd Roberts, Poor Law Auditor of the Metropolis, as to the mode in which he is desired to carry out his duties; and, whether the President will lay upon the Table a Statement of the Surcharges made upon the Masters of Workhouses and others in the Metropolis during the last two years, and also of the reasons alleged by the auditor for such Surcharges, and the cases in which they have been remitted or enforced?

MR. SCLATER-BOOTH

, in reply, said, that no special instructions had been given for the purpose mentioned in the Question of the hon. Member. The gentleman in question was an officer of great experience, and had been engaged in his present district for three years, during which time 128 surcharges had been made upon masters of workhouses and others. Most of them were very common-place, but the hon. Gentleman was quite at liberty to inspect the list, and select such items as he thought ought to be laid on the Table of the House.
