HC Deb 19 May 1873 vol 216 c98
MR. GOURLEY

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, If he would state to the House why, since all previous Inspectors General of Police at the Mauritius have been allowed to reside in the country within easy access of the head office, Lieutenant Colonel O'Brien has been compelled by the Governor to reside in the town of Port Louis, to the detriment of his health?

MR. KNATCHBULL HUGESSEN

In reply, Sir, to the Question of my hon. Friend, I have to say that previous Inspectors General of Police at the Mauritius, and Colonel O'Brien himself, have resided in the country within easy access of the head office; but Colonel O'Brien having thought fit without leave to remove his residence to a considerable distance from the town, has been ordered to return to Port Louis or its neighbourhood.
