HC Deb 22 July 1872 vol 212 cc1519-20
MR. COWPER-TEMPLE

asked the Chief Commissioner of Works, Whether it is intended to employ any portion of the land within the boundary fence of Battersea Park for purposes of building?

MR. AYRTON

said, he had not heard of any proposal to employ any portion of the land within the boundary fence of Battersea Park for the purposes of building, nor had he any intention so to employ it himself.

SIR ROBERT PEEL

said, that one side of the Park remained in a most unfinished state; and, considering the numbers of persons who used the Park, it would be well if a Vote could be taken in the Estimates of the year to complete it.

MR. AYRTON

said, the Estimates for the present year had been already voted; but it was desirable that something more should be done at Battersea Park, and he was taking steps to have more trees planted around it, so as to hide any houses which might afterwards be built. He regretted that this course had not been taken by the right hon. Gentleman his predecessor, who had asked the Question, during the considerable time he had held the office.
