HC Deb 08 June 1871 vol 206 cc1677-8
MR. BUXTON

asked the Secretary of State for War, Whether it is true that the Martello towers have been surveyed with the view of restoring them?

SIR HENRY STORKS

said, in reply, that inquiry was made last year into the defences of the Eastern and South-eastern coasts by a Committee of Engineer officers, with a view of ascertaining which of the Martello Towers should be maintained and which should be abandoned. The Committee recommended the maintenance of some and the abandonment of others, and it is intended to act on their recommendations. No question of restoration has arisen.
