HC Deb 03 December 1867 vol 190 cc535-6
MR. DARBY GRIFFITH

asked the Government, Whether it is the intention of the Government to advise the Crown to confer a title of dignity on a gentleman who was for a short time a Member of this House for the Borough of Andover, on account of his having vacated his seat in order to provide a seat for one of the Law Officers of the Crown?

LORD STANLEY

It is not the intention of the Government to advise the Crown to confer a title upon any gentleman on account of his having vacated his seat in order to provide one for a Law Officer of the Crown. Such a use of the patronage of the Crown we should consider improper, not to say corrupt.
