HC Deb 09 July 1863 vol 172 c432
MR. MAGUIRE

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether there has been received in the Colonial Office, a Bill for the incorporation of the Orange Lodges of Prince Edward's Island, British North America; and, if so, whether the Government would think it their duty to advise the Crown to assent to such a matter?

MR. CHICHESTER FORTESCUE

stated, in reply, that his noble Friend the Colonial Secretary had heard, with great regret, that a Bill calculated to excite bitter religious animosities had been adopted by the Local Legislature; the Bill, however, had not yet been received at the Colonial Office, and therefore it would be impossible and improper for him to state at that moment what advice the Secretary of State would give to the Crown as to confirming the Bill or otherwise.
