HC Deb 07 May 1861 vol 162 cc1651-2
VISCOUNT CURZON

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for War, Why the pay of Yeomanry Officers has been reduced to seven shillings per day?

MR. T. G. BARING

said, that the reduction had been made in consequence of the Report of a Committee composed of Officers of the Line and of Yeomanry Officers, who had been requested by the Secretary of State to consider the present position of the Yeomanry service. The Committee reported that, while recognizing the value and utility of that force, they thought some saving in the cost of its maintenance might be effected, and. among other reductions, they recommended this one in the pay of the Officers. From conversations he had had with many of them, he believed they would not object to that change.

MAJOR EDWARDS

said, he hoped the Report of the Committee would be laid on the Table.

COLONEL KNOX

said, he wished to know whether the Report had yet been made to the War Department?

MR. T. G. BARING

said, the Report had been made, and it would be laid on the Table at once.
