HC Deb 14 February 1860 vol 156 c1036
LORD CLAUD HAMILTON

said, he desired to ask the Secretary to the Admiralty Whether the attention of the Board has been directed to the quality of the wine supplied to the Navy for medical purposes, it having been described as unfit for the use of invalids, although exempt from duty. And, also, whether he can give an assurance to the House that the drugs supplied to the Navy are not of an equally adulterated and deleterious description?

LORD CLARENCE PAGET

said, that drugs for the use of the navy were supplied from Apothecaries' Hall, and therefore were of the best of their kind. With regard to the wine no complaint had been made from any of the ships. But the statement of his right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer the other night caused some little sensation at the Admiralty, and therefore they were making inquiries into the subject.
