HC Deb 04 May 1858 vol 150 cc20-1
MR. SCHNEIDER

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary for the Colonies whether Her Majesty's Government have received from the Governor of South Australia a Copy of a Law passed by the Legislature of that Colony in the year 1857, for legalizing Marriage with a deceased Wife's Sister, and whether the Government intend to advise Her Majesty to give Her sanction thereto?

LORD STANLEY

said, it was quite true that the Legislature of South Australia had passed an Act for the purpose of legalizing a Marriage with a deceased Wife's Sister. A copy of that Act had been very lately received at the Co'onial Office, and as some legal doubts were supposed to have arisen in connection with its main provision, it had been referred to the legal advisers of the Colonial Department, but their Report had not yet been received.
