HC Deb 25 March 1858 vol 149 c712
MR. CHEETHAM

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of the Board of Control, if it be the intention of Her Majesty's Government to constitute a Board of Public Works in each Presidency of India, distinct from those Boards now existing there, whose special duties should be the construction of Roads, of Works of Irrigation and Navigable Canals, and the improvement of the Navigation of Rivers.

MR. BAILLIE

in reply said, that it was not the intention of the Government to adopt the course referred to by the hon. Gentleman, but inasmuch as their only object must be to make as efficient as possible their Departments of Public Works failed in discharging satisfactorily the duties required of them, of course, the Government would not hesitate to introduce the necessary changes.
