HC Deb 17 June 1856 vol 142 c1579
MR. STAFFORD

wished to ask some Member of Her Majesty's Government whether it was intended to give pensions to the widows and orphans of captains and other officers in the transport service who had lost their lives during the time these vessels were employed by the Crown?

SIR CHARLES WOOD

was not aware that there was any intention of giving pensions to such persons. They were not included in any existing pension warrant. Pensions were confined to persons in Her Majesty's service, in the army or navy, and these persons formed parts of the crews of merchant vessels.
