HC Deb 28 April 1856 vol 141 cc1593-4
VISCOUNT CASTLEROSSE

said, he wished to ask the right hon. Gentleman the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether the Government intended to introduce any measure, during the present Session, to enable them to alter the relative proportion in which that portion of the constabulary force charged upon the Consolidated Fund is at present distributed among counties in Ireland; or to apportion the burden of supporting the supernumerary force upon a more equitable principle than that which regulates the present system?

MR. HORSMAN

said, the Government had had the question under consideration, and had come to the conclusion that a more equitable distribution than that which now existed might be made with reference to the Irish constabulary force. However, it would require the operation of an Act of Parliament to carry out the proposed change, and if the state of Irish business in that House admitted of his doing so, he should be prepared to introduce a Bill for that object.
