§ The CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUERsaid, that on receiving an application from the trustees of the British Museum for the sum of 3,000l. on account of these excavations, he had agreed to appropriate the sum of 2,000l. to defray the expenses incurred during two years by Mr. Layard; subsequently a further application appeared to have been made to the Treasury for more money, to which no answer had yet been given.
