HC Deb 20 March 1849 vol 103 c1031
MR. MILES

wished to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer a question relative to a statement made during the recent debate on the burdens of real property, with regard to the importation of foreign cattle. Had the right hon. Baronet made any inquiry on the subject of these returns, and were the returns such that the public could rely upon their accuracy?

The CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

said, he had made an inquiry on the subject of these returns, but his right hon. Friend the Chairman of the Board of Excise having been out of town for the last week, it was only that day that he had been able to see him, and therefore he was not yet prepared to give the hon. Member a positive answer, or explanation, with regard to these returns. He had no doubt, however, that the returns could be safely relied upon by the public.
