HC Deb 13 March 1849 vol 103 cc633-5

Motion made and Question proposed, that the Bill be now read a Second Time.

MR. AGLIONBY moved that it be read a second time that day six months, on the ground that it was objectionable in principle on the very face of it. It proposed to raise 75,000l., in addition to 950,000l. already raised, and authorised the merging in the company of shares on which the calls were not paid up, for the purpose of a re-issue, thus depriving the original shareholder of his interest, and creating a new body of shareholders.

Amendment proposed, to leave out the word "now," and at the end of the Question to add the words "upon this day six months." Question proposed, "That the word 'now,' stand part of the Question."

MR. COBBOLD

supported the Bill, and trusted that the House would not regard what had dropped from the he Members for Cockermouth, for that no representations could have been more erroneous.

MR. BROTHERTON

said, the Bill was a very objectionalde one, but hoped his hon. Friend would withdraw his Amendment, and move the postponement of the Bill for a fortnight.

MR. HUME

thought it would not he fair thus suddenly to throw the Bill out altogether, and as a legal meeting of the company could not be had before a month, he begged leave to move that the Bill be read a second time that day month.

MR. AGLIONBY

said, that as this suggestion came from him, he therefore withdrew his Amendment to make way for that of his hon. Friend.

Amendment, by leave, withdrawn. Another Amendment proposed, to leave out the word "now," and at the end of the Question to add the words "upon Tuesday the 17th day of April next." Question put, "That the word 'now' stand part of the Question." House divided:—Ayes 113; Noes 54: Majority 59.

Main Question put, and agreed to.

Bill read 2a and committed, and referred to the Committee of Selection.
