HC Deb 29 November 1847 vol 95 cc268-9
MR. FRE WEN

wished to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, as it was his intention to submit to Parliament a measure for the revision of the Excise laws, he could hold out any hope that he would propose the repeal of the duty on hops?

The CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

replied that he had, on a former occasion, informed the House that he might be able to propose considerable changes in the Excise laws, but he had added, as a special proviso, that the re-vision would be such as not to interfere with the revenue. He thought it would not be proper that he should now anticipate the statement he might hereafter have to lay before the House, and the hon. Member for Sussex must therefore excuse him for declining to answer that question.
