HC Deb 16 February 1842 vol 60 cc530-1
Mr. W. Evans

wished to ask the right hon. Baronet whether it were intended, during the present Session, to bring in any bill for the establishment of local courts for the recovery of debts.

Sir James Graham

was aware that great inconvenience had arisen last Session from persons out of doors not knowing what was the intention of the Government with respect to this subject. He could now state, that it was the intention of the Government to bring in a bill for the establishment of local courts. The bill would provide greater facilities than formerly, by local tribunals for the recovery of all debts below the amount of 15l. Whether the bill would be introduced by himself in that House, or by his noble and learned Friend, the Lord Chancellor, in the other House, was not yet determined; but an early opportunity would be taken to introduce the measure. Under these circumstances, he trusted that it would not be necessary to make application to Parliament for the renewal of small debt acts, or for bills for the establishment of local tribunals for the recovery of small debts.
