- An informal grouping of nations of southern Africa bordering or near to the Republic of South Africa in the late 1970s, defined by their position with respect to the apartheid sytsem. Eventually consisted of Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
