Definition

• Originally part of the British Museum. In 1963 it was formally separated from the Museum by an Act of Parliament and established as an independent body with its own trustees and named British Museum (Natural History). This remains its legal title, but the name was later changed to The Natural History Museum by which it is now commonly known.
