- Nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZ) are designated where land drainage and contributes to the nitrate found in “polluted” waters (surface or ground waters that contain at least 50mg per litre (mg/l) nitrate, or will contain this much nitrate if no action is taken, and waters which show excessive plant growth caused by a high proportion of nitrates).
