Definition
  • Spiritual leader in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The 11th Panchen Lama announced by the Dalai Lama in May 1995 is Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, whose whereabouts are unknown. A Chinese search committee nominated Gyancain Norbu as its choice later in 1995. Neither authority recognises the other's choice.
History note
  • Potentially controversial - the Tibetans and the Chinese have both appointed successors to this post. The Tibetan nominee, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, is the one recognised by the UK government.
