Scope note

• Use for the people of Diego Garcia and the Chagos Islands, their resettlement and land claims. Use British Indian Ocean Territory only where people are not involved at all.

Definition

• Indigenous people of the Chagos Islands displaced, mainly to Mauritius and the Seychelles, when the island of Diego Garcia was leased to USA as a military base from 1970 onwards. Many now have British citizenship. An Order in Council on 10.06.04 replaced existing constitution of British Indian Ocean Territory and no person has right of abode in the territory or unrestricted access.
