1929 — 24th July 27A Selection of amendments

(1) In respect of any motion or any bill under consideration either in committee of the whole house or on report, Mr. Speaker, or in committee the chairman of ways and means, and the deputy chairman, shall have power to select the new clauses or amendments to be proposed, and may, if he thinks fit, call upon any member who has given notice of an amendment to give such explanation of the object of the amendment as may enable him to form a judgement upon it.

1951 — 6th December 31 Selection of amendments

(1) In respect of any motion, or in respect of any bill under consideration either in committee of the whole House or on report, Mr. Speaker, or in committee the Chairman of Ways and Means, and the Deputy Chairman, shall have power to select the new clauses or amendments to be proposed, and may, if he thinks fit, call upon any member who has given notice of an amendment to give such explanation of the object of the amendment as may enable him to form a judgement upon it.

1971 — 21st January 33 Selection of amendments

(1) In respect of any motion, or in respect of any bill under consideration either in a committee of the whole House or on report, Mr. Speaker, or in a committee the Chairman of Ways and Means, and the Deputy Chairman, shall have power to select the new clauses or amendments to be proposed, and may, if he thinks fit, call upon any member who has given notice of an amendment to give such explanation of the object of the amendment as may enable him to form a judgement upon it.

(2) For the purposes of this order an instruction to a committee on a bill and a motion to recommit a bill shall be treated as amendments proposed in respect of that bill.

(1) In respect of any motion or any bill under consideration on report or any Lords amendment to a bill, Mr. Speaker shall have power to select the amendments, new clauses or new schedules to be proposed thereto.

(2) In committee of the whole House, the Chairman of Ways and Means and the Deputy Chairman shall have the like power to select the amendments, new clauses or new schedules to be proposed.

(3) Mr. Speaker, or in a committee of the whole House, the Chairman of Ways and Means or the Deputy Chairman, may, if he think fit, call upon any Member who has given notice of an amendment, new clause or new schedule to give such explanation of the object thereof as may enable him to form a judgement upon it.

(4) For the purposes of this order, motions for instructions to committees on bills and motions to recommit bills shall be treated as if they were amendments under paragraph (1) of this order.
