The Government are deeply concerned by the reported breakdown of a ceasefire agreement with the Shan State Army North (now known as the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army) that has led to renewed conflict in Shan State. Our ambassador to Rangoon raised the issue of the ongoing conflict with the Burmese Government on 10 May 2011 underlining the importance of a political solution. Senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials made the same point to the Burmese Ambassador to the UK on 5 May 2011. We continue to monitor the situation and urge the Burmese Government to engage in genuine dialogue with ethnic groups and work towards a peaceful solution.
