Almost three quarters of the electorate took part in thereferendum, resulting in 17.4 million votes to leave the EuropeanUnion. This is the highest number of votes cast for anything in UKelectoral history. This was the biggest democratic mandate for acourse of action ever directed at any UK Government.Parliament also overwhelmingly confirmed the result of the referendumby voting with clear and convincing majorities in both of its Houses forthe European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill. At the last generalelection over 80% of British people voted for parties committed torespecting the Leave result. The Government will honour the referendum result and get the bestdeal possible. To do otherwise would be to undermine the decision ofthe British people. The full legal text of the Withdrawal Agreement has now been agreed inprinciple. This agreement marks a decisive step forward towards asmooth and orderly exit from the EU.
