answer text
<p>The Legal Aid Agency monitors the number of applications for public funding, as opposed to the number of discrete individuals who have received legal aid; one person may apply for legal aid on more than one occasion.</p><p>The figures below show the number of applications received and those subsequently granted for Civil Representation by providers located within the York Local Authority area. Please note that location data is based upon the solicitor’s office, rather than the address of the applicant. Individuals who reside within York may choose to access legal aid at a firm based in another location, and vice versa.</p><p>Where an application is ‘not granted’, this may be for a variety of reasons, including administrative (e.g. where information is missing or forms are not signed), or where the applicant does not meet the legal or financial tests to be eligible for public funding.</p><p>Solicitors are responsible for decisions on whether to grant funding under the ‘Legal Help’ scheme of civil legal aid, and therefore data on unsuccessful applications for this type of public funding are not available. Information on those cases opened under ‘Legal Help’ is published at: <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/853445/legal-aid-statistics-civil-starts-provider-location-data-to-sep-2019.csv" target="_blank">https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/853445/legal-aid-statistics-civil-starts-provider-location-data-to-sep-2019.csv</a></p><p> </p><table><tbody><tr><td><p>Financial Year</p></td><td><p>Granted</p></td><td><p>Not Granted</p></td><td><p>Total Applications</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2009-2010</p></td><td><p>775</p></td><td><p>174</p></td><td><p>949</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2010-2011</p></td><td><p>694</p></td><td><p>201</p></td><td><p>895</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2011-2012</p></td><td><p>659</p></td><td><p>99</p></td><td><p>758</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2012-2013</p></td><td><p>593</p></td><td><p>112</p></td><td><p>705</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2013-2014</p></td><td><p>428</p></td><td><p>51</p></td><td><p>479</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2014-2015</p></td><td><p>440</p></td><td><p>36</p></td><td><p>476</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2015-2016</p></td><td><p>450</p></td><td><p>30</p></td><td><p>480</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2016-2017</p></td><td><p>462</p></td><td><p>16</p></td><td><p>478</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2017-2018</p></td><td><p>535</p></td><td><p>34</p></td><td><p>569</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2018-2019</p></td><td><p>616</p></td><td><p>21</p></td><td><p>637</p></td></tr></tbody></table>
