The instability in Kachin and Shan states, which started in June 2011, has led to the displacement of over 70,000 people, loss of lives and livelihoods, and damage to infrastructure. Humanitarian priorities include the provision of shelter, water and sanitation, and food for those displaced. The security situation makes access difficult, particularly for international organisations and the United Nations. Humanitarian organisations have, however, had some level of access to displaced populations in hard-to-reach areas.

DFID has provided £2 million to support humanitarian needs in Kachin through a number of local non-governmental organisations. This is helping to meet the

needs of around 27,500 internally displaced people, largely in border camps not controlled by Government, for food security, shelter, water, sanitation, health and bedding. We continue to review the needs of the internally displaced people in Kachin but at this stage do not have any firm plans to provide additional funding.
|
