The UK supported the advice provided by ICANN's Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) to the Board of ICANN in April 2013 following its meeting in Beijing that as a general rule the generic top level domain name (gTLD) space should be operated in an open manner. As an exception to this general rule, the GAC also advised the board that in the cases of gTLDs associated with market sectors which have clear and/or regulated entry requirements in any jurisdictions, such as the charity, financial, gambling and health sectors, appropriate registration restrictions should be applied by the registry operators. The board accepted this GAC advice.
