I announced a new UK contribution of £6.1 million of humanitarian assistance during my visit to Yemen on 12 March. This is a substantial initial contribution against the United Nations (UN) and International Committee of the Red Cross 2012 emergency appeals for Yemen. This will help provide access to health care for over 100,000 conflict-affected civilians and emergency shelter, drinking water and sanitation for 23,000 internally displaced persons.Through the Department for International Development, the UK is providing £20 million of humanitarian assistance in 2011-12 and we are the fourth largest humanitarian donor for 2011 according to the UN Financial Tracking Service. We expect to announce further humanitarian support from our 2012-13 budget shortly.
