<p>The majority of government borrowing is financed through the issuance of UK government bonds known as ‘gilts’ by the Debt Management Office (DMO) and as such, the majority of the government’s debt is held in gilts.</p><p> </p><p>The Treasury does not hold detailed information on the holders of gilts. Information on sectoral holdings of gilts is published on a quarterly basis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).</p><p> </p>
