The information requested falls within the responsibility of the UK Statistics Authority. I have asked the authority to reply.Letter from Karen Dunnell, dated July 2009:"As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your Parliamentary Questions asking:""what information her Department hold on the number of people who were (a) unemployed and (b) long-term unemployed between (i) 1980-1985 and (ii) 1990-1995, by (A) qualification and (B) occupation. (286747)""what information her Department holds on the number of people who were (a) unemployed and (b) long-term unemployed between (i) 1980-1985 and (ii) 1990-1995, by (A) qualification and (B) previous occupation. (286748)""how many people were (a) unemployed and (b) long-term unemployed in each year between (i) 1980-85 and (ii) 1990-95, by (A) qualification and (B) occupation. (286749)""Estimates on the number of people who were unemployed by qualification are not available for 1980 to 1985 and 1990 to 1995. Estimates for unemployed people by occupation in last job are available for 1992 to 1995 and are provided in the attached table. The estimates are derived from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). As with any sample survey, estimates from the LFS are subject to a margin of uncertainty. This is assessed in a footnote to the table.""The figures in the table are derived from the LFS microdata which are weighted using the official population estimates published in autumn 2007. They are not entirely consistent with the figures published in the monthly Labour Market Statistics Statistical Bulletin, which are weighted using more up-to-date population estimates."<Table width="100%" summary="" cellspacing="3" cellpadding="3" border="0"><thead><tr><th>Unemployed people aged 16 and over by occupation in last job and duration of unemployment, three month periods ending September, 1992-95, Great Britain, 1992-94; United Kingdom, 1995, not seasonally adjusted</th></tr></thead><TR><TD>Thousand</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Occupation in last job¹</TD><TD>Unemployed²</TD><TD>Long-term unemployed³</TD></TR><TR><TD>1992</TD><TD>Managers and senior officials</TD><TD>195</TD><TD>63</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Professional occupations</TD><TD>79</TD><TD>18</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Associate professional and technical</TD><TD>123</TD><TD>37</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Administrative and technical</TD><TD>288</TD><TD>91</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Skilled trades occupations</TD><TD>491</TD><TD>194</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Personal service occupations</TD><TD>204</TD><TD>65</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Sales and customer service occupations</TD><TD>185</TD><TD>54</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Process, plant and machine operatives</TD><TD>328</TD><TD>129</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Elementary occupations</TD><TD>358</TD><TD>166</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Total4</TD><TD>2,808</TD><TD>1,039</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD>1993</TD><TD>Managers and senior officials</TD><TD>204</TD><TD>84</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Professional occupations</TD><TD>93</TD><TD>28</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Associate professional and technical</TD><TD>132</TD><TD>37</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Administrative and technical</TD><TD>297</TD><TD>101</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Skilled trades occupations</TD><TD>497</TD><TD>239</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Personal service occupations</TD><TD>213</TD><TD>79</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Sales and customer service occupations</TD><TD>196</TD><TD>68</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Process, plant and machine operatives</TD><TD>350</TD><TD>160</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Elementary occupations</TD><TD>339</TD><TD>159</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Total4</TD><TD>2,887</TD><TD>1,205</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD>1994</TD><TD>Managers and senior officials</TD><TD>182</TD><TD>75</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Professional occupations</TD><TD>87</TD><TD>25</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Associate professional and technical</TD><TD>121</TD><TD>41</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Administrative and technical</TD><TD>249</TD><TD>93</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Skilled trades occupations</TD><TD>386</TD><TD>192</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Personal service occupations</TD><TD>207</TD><TD>78</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Sales and customer service occupations</TD><TD>171</TD><TD>58</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Process, plant and machine operatives</TD><TD>305</TD><TD>146</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Elementary occupations</TD><TD>341</TD><TD>170</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Total4</TD><TD>2,644</TD><TD>1,123</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD>19955</TD><TD>Managers and senior officials</TD><TD>165</TD><TD>68</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Professional occupations</TD><TD>86</TD><TD>28</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Associate professional and technical</TD><TD>109</TD><TD>37</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Administrative and technical</TD><TD>251</TD><TD>79</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Skilled trades occupations</TD><TD>332</TD><TD>171</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Personal service occupations</TD><TD>197</TD><TD>72</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Sales and customer service occupations</TD><TD>183</TD><TD>56</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Process, plant and machine operatives</TD><TD>310</TD><TD>151</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Elementary occupations</TD><TD>303</TD><TD>132</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Total4</TD><TD>2,535</TD><TD>1,028</TD></TR><tfoot><TR><td>¹ Standard Occupational Classification 1990.</td></TR><TR><td>² Includes those whose duration of unemployment was not known.</td></TR><TR><td>³ Includes those unemployed for 12 months or more.</td></TR><TR><td>4 Includes those whose occupation was not known.</td></TR><TR><td>5 Coefficients of Variation have been calculated for the latest period as an indication of the quality of the estimates, as described below:</td></TR><TR><td>Guide to Quality:</td></TR><TR><td>The Coefficient of Variation (CV) indicates the quality of an estimate, the smaller the CV value the higher the quality.
