The Environment Agency expect an initial engineering review to be completed by specialist external contractors in April 2012. This will survey relevant literature and the engineering methods that are relevant to methane monitoring and control.Following this review, the Environment Agency will undertake further work to understand the practices and technical methods available to quantify, manage and minimise fugitive emissions of methane from unconventional gas operations. The research work which DECC has commissioned into how methane emissions related to the extraction of shale gas will be incorporated in the UK's greenhouse gas inventory which is due for completion in summer 2012. We will publish the results of this research on the DECC website once it is complete.
