The information requested falls within the responsibility of the UK Statistics Authority. I have asked the authority to reply.Letter from Jil Matheson, dated December 2009:"As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your Parliamentary Question on how many lone parents were in work in (a) 1998 and (b) 2005; and how many lone parents were in work in each local authority area in the North West on the most recent date for which figures are available. (304677)""The information requested is given in the tables attached. The figures in table 1 are the number of lone parents in employment in the UK. These estimates come from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) household datasets and are available for the three month period ending in June of each year requested.""Information at local authority level comes from the Annual Population Survey (APS) household datasets. Table 2 shows the number of lone parents and confidence intervals for each local authority within the North West for January to December 2008.""As with any sample survey, estimates from the LFS and APS are subject to a margin of uncertainty as different samples give different results. The confidence intervals provided in table 2 give ""an indication as to the accuracy of the estimates, and how much they could vary if taken from a different sample. These estimates are such that there is 95 per cent certainty that from all samples possible they will lie within the lower and upper bounds."<Table width="100%" summary="" cellspacing="3" cellpadding="3" border="0"><thead><tr><th>Table 1: Number of working-age¹ lone parents with dependent children² in employment, April to June 1998 and 2005, United Kingdom</th></tr></thead><TR><TD>April to June each year</TD><TD>Level (thousand)</TD></TR><TR><TD>1998</TD><TD>778</TD></TR><TR><TD>2005</TD><TD>1,023</TD></TR><tfoot><TR><td>¹ Men aged 16-64 and women aged 16-59.</td></TR><TR><td>² Children under 16 and those aged 16-18 who have never married and are in full-time education.</td></TR><TR><td>Source:</td></TR><TR><td>LFS household datasets</td></TR></tfoot></Table><Table width="100%" summary="" cellspacing="3" cellpadding="3" border="0"><thead><tr><th>Table 2: Number of working-age¹ lone parents with dependent children² in employment with 95% confidence intervals³ by each local authority in the North West region, January to December 2008</th></tr></thead><TR><TD>Thousand</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Level</TD><TD>Lower CI</TD><TD>Upper CI</TD></TR><TR><TD>United Kingdom</TD><TD>1,070</TD><TD>1,030</TD><TD>1,111</TD></TR><TR><TD>North West</TD><TD>129</TD><TD>119</TD><TD>139</TD></TR><TR><TD>Bolton</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>6</TD></TR><TR><TD>Bury</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>5</TD></TR><TR><TD>Manchester</TD><TD>9</TD><TD>7</TD><TD>12</TD></TR><TR><TD>Oldham</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>6</TD></TR><TR><TD>Rochdale</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>5</TD></TR><TR><TD>Salford</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>6</TD></TR><TR><TD>Stockport</TD><TD>6</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>8</TD></TR><TR><TD>Tameside</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>6</TD></TR><TR><TD>Trafford</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>6</TD></TR><TR><TD>Wigan</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>7</TD></TR><TR><TD>Knowsley</TD><TD>5</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>6</TD></TR><TR><TD>Liverpool</TD><TD>9</TD><TD>6</TD><TD>12</TD></TR><TR><TD>St. Helens</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>4</TD></TR><TR><TD>Sefton</TD><TD>6</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>8</TD></TR><TR><TD>Wirral</TD><TD>6</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>8</TD></TR><TR><TD>Halton</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Warrington</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>5</TD></TR><TR><TD>Blackburn with Darwen</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Blackpool</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>4</TD></TR><TR><TD>Chester</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>4</TD></TR><TR><TD>Congleton</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD></TR><TR><TD>Crewe and Nantwich</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD></TR><TR><TD>Ellesmere Port and Neston</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Macclesfield</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>5</TD></TR><TR><TD>Vale Royal</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Allerdale</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Barrow-in-Furness</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD></TR><TR><TD>Carlisle</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>4</TD></TR><TR><TD>Copeland</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD></TR><TR><TD>Eden</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD></TR><TR><TD>South Lakeland</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD></TR><TR><TD>Burnley</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Chorley</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD></TR><TR><TD>Fylde</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Hyndburn</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD></TR><TR><TD>Lancaster</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Pendle</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD></TR><TR><TD>Preston</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>4</TD></TR><TR><TD>Ribble Valley</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Rossendale</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD><TD>4—</TD></TR><TR><TD>South Ribble</TD><TD>3</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>5</TD></TR><TR><TD>West Lancashire</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>3</TD></TR><TR><TD>Wyre</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>4</TD></TR><tfoot><TR><td>¹ Men aged 16-64 and women aged 16-59.</td></TR><TR><td>² Children under 16 and those aged 16-18 who have never married and are in full-time education.</td></TR><TR><td>³ 95 per cent. certainty that the true estimate would lie within the lower and upper bounds.</td></TR><TR><td>4 Sample size too small to provide an estimate.</td></TR><TR><td>Source:</td></TR><TR><td>APS household datasets</td></TR></tfoot></Table>
