I have been asked to reply. The information requested falls within the responsibility of the UK Statistics Authority. I have asked the authority to reply.Letter from Karen Dunnell, dated July 2009:"As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking what the average earnings of people of working age was in (a) Jarrow constituency, (b) South Tyneside and (c) the North East in each year since 1997. (286344)""Average levels of earnings are estimated from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE), and are provided for all employees on adult rates of pay whose pay for the survey period was not affected by absence. The ASHE, carried out in April each year, is the most comprehensive source of earnings information in the United Kingdom. It is a sample of all employees who are members of pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) schemes.""Estimates for people of working age would only be available at disproportionate cost, but we have provided average weekly earnings estimates for the breakdowns required for full-time and part-time employees."<Table width="100%" summary="" cellspacing="3" cellpadding="3" border="0"><thead><tr><th>Median gross weekly pay for full-time employee jobsa</th></tr></thead><TR><TD>£</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Jarrow parliamentary constituency</TD><TD>South Tyneside local authority</TD><TD>North East</TD></TR><TR><TD>1997</TD><TD>**290.4</TD><TD>*289.7</TD><TD>299.4</TD></TR><TR><TD>1998</TD><TD>**314.3</TD><TD>*314.7</TD><TD>302.4</TD></TR><TR><TD>1999</TD><TD>**324.3</TD><TD>*313.5</TD><TD>314.0</TD></TR><TR><TD>2000</TD><TD>*325.3</TD><TD>*335.7</TD><TD>329.3</TD></TR><TR><TD>2001</TD><TD>**350.9</TD><TD>*351.0</TD><TD>333.7</TD></TR><TR><TD>2002</TD><TD>*338.7</TD><TD>*325.6</TD><TD>344.8</TD></TR><TR><TD>2003</TD><TD>*314.4</TD><TD>*331.4</TD><TD>348.4</TD></TR><TR><TD>2004b</TD><TD>**335.3</TD><TD>*379.7</TD><TD>372.9</TD></TR><TR><TD>2004c</TD><TD>**368.3</TD><TD>*380.5</TD><TD>370.2</TD></TR><TR><TD>2005</TD><TD>*371.4</TD><TD>*369.7</TD><TD>383.7</TD></TR><TR><TD>2006d</TD><TD>**386.1</TD><TD>*383.8</TD><TD>398.1</TD></TR><TR><TD>2006e</TD><TD>**384.5</TD><TD>*384.9</TD><TD>394.8</TD></TR><TR><TD>2007</TD><TD>*382.8</TD><TD>*382.7</TD><TD>404.3</TD></TR><TR><TD>2008</TD><TD>**401.1</TD><TD>*408.5</TD><TD>420.6</TD></TR></Table><Table width="100%" summary="" cellspacing="3" cellpadding="3" border="0"><TR><TD>Median gross weekly pay for part-time employee jobsa</TD></TR><TR><TD>£</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>Jarrow parliamentary constituency</TD><TD>South Tyneside local authority</TD><TD>North East</TD></TR><TR><TD>1997</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**82.2</TD><TD>83.5</TD></TR><TR><TD>1998</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>84.6</TD></TR><TR><TD>1999</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**92.4</TD><TD>91.4</TD></TR><TR><TD>2000</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**90.3</TD><TD>95.0</TD></TR><TR><TD>2001</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**99.1</TD><TD>100.4</TD></TR><TR><TD>2002</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**109.2</TD><TD>110.8</TD></TR><TR><TD>2003</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**104.5</TD><TD>116.1</TD></TR><TR><TD>2004b</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**122.4</TD><TD>123.8</TD></TR><TR><TD>2004c</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**119.1</TD><TD>122.0</TD></TR><TR><TD>2005</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**125.7</TD><TD>127.3</TD></TR><TR><TD>2006d</TD><TD>**119.2</TD><TD>**105.3</TD><TD>132.8</TD></TR><TR><TD>2006e</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**107.6</TD><TD>132.9</TD></TR><TR><TD>2007</TD><TD>x—</TD><TD>**126.1</TD><TD>138.4</TD></TR><TR><TD>2008</TD><TD>**127.0</TD><TD>**140.7</TD><TD>143.0</TD></TR><tfoot><TR><td>Notes:</td></TR><TR><td>a Employees on adult rates whose pay for the survey pay-period was not affected by absence.</td></TR><TR><td>b 2004 results excluding supplementary survey for comparison with 2003.</td></TR><TR><td>c 2004 results including supplementary surveys designed to improve</td></TR><TR><td>d 2006 results with methodology consistent with 2005.</td></TR><TR><td>e 2006 results with methodology consistent with 2007.</td></TR><TR><td>Guide to quality</td></TR><TR><td>The Coefficient of Variation (CV) indicates the quality of a figure, the smaller the CV value the higher the quality.
