The support from the UK contributed to a wider response managed by the World Food Programme (WFP). From August to December 2011, WFP had been providing food directly, as food markets were affected by the floods and insufficient food was available. As markets recovered, WFP started into providing cash, which was the part of the programme supported by DFID. The food ration had consisted of 266g of rice, and 20g of pulses per person per day, covering nearly half of the daily calorie and protein requirements of the household members, to complement the Government of Bangladesh's provision of rice. £11 was the cash value equivalent of this support, to ensure that households could purchase the food requirement which also has the benefit of supporting the re-establishment of local markets.
|
