In his announcement of DFID's Bilateral Aid Review to the House on 1 March 2011 the Secretary of State for International Development, my right hon. Friend the Member for Sutton Coldfield (Mr Mitchell), indicated his intention to increase UK aid funding to Malawi over the four years to 2014-15.Since then we have become increasingly concerned about economic management and governance in Malawi. The Secretary of State has raised these concerns with the Government of Malawi, and concluded that, until there are changes in Government of Malawi policy we can no longer justify the provision of general budget support to the Government of Malawi. However, we are determined to continue funding programmes that protect the poor. DFID support has helped improve food security for over seven million people a year by providing them with high yielding maize and legume seeds via the Farm Input Subsidy programme. We are currently considering how best to continue support to improve food security in Malawi.
