Make a cure for myxomatosis, affecting our rabbit and hare population. |
It appeared in Britain 1953. It quickly spread to both wild and domestic rabbit populations and within a few years had spread throughout Europe. Myxomatosis has been a threat to wild and domestic rabbits ever since. It's now been reported to have spread to our hare population. |
David Wembridge, Peoples Trust for Endangered Species Survey Officer, warned that if Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) or Myxomatosis spreads to non-resistant hares for the first time, the animals could be virtually eradicated in a couple of years. Inadvertently resulted in the deaths of 99 percent of the rabbit population only three years later.
