Tackling nuisance calls is a priority for the Government and we are pursuing a range of options for reform, both legislative and non-legislative, which will help to make a significant difference. On 30 March 2014, we published our Nuisance Calls Action Plan, which sets out proposals including legislation that will enable Ofcom to share information more easily with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and we will also be consulting on lowering the legal threshold, to enable the ICO to issue more monetary penalties to organisations that break the rules. Further details of the Action Plan can be found at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/nuisance-calls-action-plan-unveiled

Steps taken so far include having improved signposting and information, clearer advice for consumers, a simpler complaints process, greater use by regulators of their powers, including the ICO and Ofcom having issued monetary penalties totalling £2.59 million for calls and SMS text messages and work on improving the ability of communication service providers to trace calls. We will continue to work with regulators, consumer groups and industry to deliver better protection for consumers.
|
