<p>The Government has protected poor and vulnerable groups as far as possible while urgently taking action to tackle the deficit it inherited.</p><p>Work remains the best and most immediate way out of poverty and the Budget took action to support families and make the tax and welfare system fairer, including further increasing the income tax personal allowance to take 2.7 million people on low incomes out of tax altogether.</p><p>In addition, the Government has sought a wide range of views as part of a consultation on better measures of child poverty which include, but go beyond, income to provide a more accurate picture of the reality of child poverty. The consultation has now dosed and the Government will respond in due course.</p> |
