We remain gravely concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria. Not only have thousands been killed and wounded or are going without basic supplies but also the regime has committed serious human rights violations against its own citizens. The United Nations (UN) estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since the popular uprising began in March 2011 and between 100,000 and 200,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the violence. The registered refugee population in countries neighbouring Syria is more than 25,000, but unofficial estimates suggest there are more than 30,000.A Syrian Government-led humanitarian assessment mission is currently under way, with participation of the UN and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. We will closely monitor UN planning following the assessment mission. The UK has already committed £4.5 million to support the global humanitarian response. We are continuing to call upon the Syrian regime immediately to allow all neutral and impartial humanitarian organisations unhindered access. |
