<p>Decisions about local policing, are for operationally independent Chief Constables. They are best placed to use their local knowledge and experience to serve local communities, including incidents such as neighbourhood disputes where there is a need for the police to be involved.</p><p>Democratically elected PCCs, or mayors with these functions, are responsible for holding Chief Constables to account for their running of the force.</p><p>As set out at the National Policing Board on 31 January, we do however, expect Chief Constables and PCCs to put neighbourhoods at the heart of local policing plans. More generally, the Government is committed to giving the police the resources they need.</p><p>We have delivered our commitment to recruit 20,000 additional police officers, with over 149,000 officers in England and Wales, which is higher than the previous peak before the Police Uplift Programme in March 2010.</p><p>We also confirmed in January a total police funding settlement of up to £18.4 billion in 2024-25, an increase of up to £842.9 million when compared to 2023-24.</p>
