The Government of Bangladesh's defence spending is relatively low, budgeted at 1.2% of gross domestic product for 2010-11 compared to the 2.4% of GDP allocated to its education budget for the same period. The UK supports Bangladesh to reduce poverty and provide basic services, including health and education, because overall, Bangladesh's resources are very low relative to the investment needed. The UK's investment helped improve teaching training for 400,000 primary teachers in 2009 alone, improving the quality of education for millions of Bangladeshi children. This funding is supplementing Government investment, not substituting for it.The Secretary of State for International Development has commissioned a review of the Department for International Development's (DFID's) aid programmes to determine how we can achieve better value for money for the taxpayer and accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. Future support to Bangladesh, including education, will be determined as part of this review.
