<p>The Office of Communications (Ofcom) can issue a monetary penalty of up to £2 million to a company for a breach of their persistent misuse rules. Ofcom has an on-going targeted enforcement programme and in the last two years Ofcom issued monetary penalties totalling £1.56 million. Ofcom is also working closely with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), to tackle the wider issue of nuisance calls, and published a joint action plan in July:</p><p>http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/silent-calls/joint-action-plan</p><p>This identified the range of work that Ofcom and the ICO are undertaking including improving call and text message tracing processes and improving guidance for consumers and business. The action plan also includes a joint review of the impact of the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) that will conclude in spring 2014 and we will review the findings to determine whether further action is necessary.</p>
