To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what his Department estimates to be the total average annual salary cost to(a) schools, (b) his Department and (c) local education authorities of (i) a newly qualified teacher, (ii) a teacher with five years experience in teaching and (iii) a teacher nearing retirement in 2002–03. For England and Wales, estimated average costs of the specified categories of teachers in England and Wales as at March 2002 (the latest available data) are as follows:

Schools responsible for their own budgets pay the whole employment cost of their teachers; LEAs pay the salaries of unattached teachers. The Department pays a number of grants which contribute to various teachers' salary costs, but these cannot be separated out in these figures.
