HC Deb 27 October 2003 vol 412 cc114-5WS
25. Mr. Jack

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on his Department's role in assisting the police to improve detection of crime. [134182]

Ms Blears

Latest figures show that the number of detections rose in the last year, and that the detection rate remains stable. We are working with the police to improve rates. For examplewe are helping the police to exploit the advances in Science and Technology; we have record police numbers—136,336 officers in England and Wales at the end of August 2003; with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), we are promoting intelligence-led policing. The National Intelligence Model is being implemented in all forces across England and Wales, and the National Policing Plan requires National Intelligence Model (NIM) to be implemented in all forces by April 2004.
