What is the number of persons currently enjoying diplomatic privileges in the United Kingdom; how many of these are members of diplomatic missions of sovereign states; how many are members of international organisations; and how many in each category hold British citizenship. [HL402]
§ Baroness Symons of Vernham DeanRecords held by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office indicate that there are currently 22,851 persons entitled to some degree of privilege and immunity under international agreements. Of these, 7,405 are members of diplomatic4WA missions and 2,952 are officials of international organisations. The remainder are dependants. Accurate figures for those in each category who hold British citizenship could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, it is estimated that fewer than 10 members of diplomatic missions and around 500 officials of international organisations hold British citizenship. Most have no entitlement to privileges and immunities other than immunity for official acts.
